Description:
The U.S. has always been a nation of immigrants. We live in an increasingly multicultural world. Our many ethnic groups add flavor to our national melting pot, and texture and color to our social fabric. But culture is not the same ethnicity; it is a vast structure of rituals, values, beliefs and customs that help provide meaning to our world and help us to interpret reality. Cultural “awareness” and “sensitivity” are not enough anymore. Cultural competence is a lifelong process that can influence our ability to work with youth and their families – and to get along with each other in the workplace. This interactive workshop looks at the definition of culture, the cultural competency continuum, and characteristics of people and organizations that continuously improve their cultural competence. You will also assess your own micro- and macro cultures, examine your school or workplace with cultural “lens”, and develop an individual action plan. Youth and adults welcome!
Objectives:
• To understand the dynamics of the current “multi-cultural” world we live in
• To demonstrate what it means to be “culturally competent”
• Determine to which extent your organization is currently engaged in culturally appropriate youth development programming
