April’s Asset of the Month is Youth Programs. This critical Developmental Asset is important for our communities to support the children through youth programming.
On March 5, 2011, the UBHCHY Coalition held its first Parent Chat at the family home of UBHCHY Chairman, Ray Fox. Fifteen Quakertown community parents attended with their middle school daughters.
Why are these parent discussions important? When your children were toddlers, it was probably quite common to have many conversations with other parents, (sometimes even people you just met at the playground or in a playgroup) about different issues.
Members of the UBHCHY Coalition joined 2,8000 substance abuse prevention and treatment leaders from across the country at Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) 21st annual National Leadership Forum.
In December of 2009, Upper Bucks Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth Chairperson, I attended a workshop in Washington, DC about Prescription Medication Take Back Programs. I learned that there is an epidemic in the U.S. due to the illegal use of prescription drugs.
In early December 2010, I attended the Drug Free Communities New Grantee in Washington, DC. Right from the opening of the meetings there was an air of excitement and collaboration as coalitions from all over the U.S. participated.
Each year the Search Institute based in Minneapolis, MN, (the organization responsible for initiating the national movement known as the “Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Initiative”) sponsors and hosts a large national, inter-generational conference.
